Few casino games carry as much drama as roulette — the spinning wheel, the bouncing ball, the tense silence before it settles. Yet the game’s origin has nothing to do with gambling at all. It began in 17th-century France, in the laboratory of a brilliant mathematician.

Blaise Pascal’s Perpetual Motion Machine

In 1655, mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal was attempting to build a perpetual motion machine — a device that could run forever without an external energy source. He never succeeded, but the spinning wheel mechanism he developed during his experiments would later be adapted into a game of chance.

From Parisian Gambling Houses to a Single Zero

By the late 18th century, a version of the roulette wheel resembling the modern game appeared in Parisian gambling houses, combining elements of earlier English wheel games and Italian board games. The earliest French wheels had both a single zero and a double zero, giving the house a certain mathematical edge.

The Blanc Brothers and the Single-Zero Wheel

In 1843, brothers François and Louis Blanc introduced a single-zero roulette wheel at a German casino in Bad Homburg, reducing the house edge and making the game more attractive to players. This single-zero version later became known as “European roulette,” while the original double-zero format persisted in the United States as “American roulette.”

A Game Built on Mathematics

Roulette’s enduring appeal lies partly in its simplicity and partly in the sheer number of betting combinations it allows — from single numbers to colors, odds, and dozens. Unlike card games, no skill or strategy can alter the fixed mathematical odds, which is precisely what makes it such a pure test of chance, still drawing crowds in every casino around the world today.
