An Italian Invention with a Grim Legend

Baccarat is widely believed to have been invented in the 1480s by an Italian gambler named Felix Falguiere, using a Tarot-based scoring system. According to legend, the game was linked to an Etruscan ritual in which a young woman’s fate — either priestesshood, banishment, or death — was decided by the roll of a nine-sided die, with baccarat’s scoring built around the number nine as the highest possible hand value.

Crossing into France and Royal Favor

The game soon spread to France, where it became a favorite pastime of French nobility, including members of the royal court. Two variants developed there: “Chemin de Fer,” in which players themselves took turns acting as banker, and “Baccarat Banque,” in which the banker role was held by a single player for an extended period.

Punto Banco and the American Simplification

When baccarat reached the Americas via Cuba in the 20th century, it was simplified further into a version called “Punto Banco,” where the casino itself always acts as the banker and players simply bet on either the “Player” or “Banker” hand. This simplified format, requiring no skill or decision-making, became the standard version found in casinos across the United States and Asia today.

A Cultural Icon

Baccarat’s reputation for elegance was cemented further by pop culture, most notably through Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels and films, where the suave spy is frequently shown at the baccarat table in high-stakes European casinos. This image helped baccarat retain a prestigious, high-roller reputation distinct from more casual casino games.

The King of Asian Casinos

Today, baccarat holds a special place in Asian gambling culture, particularly in Macau, where it accounts for the overwhelming majority of total casino revenue — far outpacing every other table game combined. Its simple rules and fast pace have made it the preferred game for high-stakes players across the region.
